Private equity gives you the opportunity to diversify and extend your existing share portfolios.

Private equity is simply the purchase of equity in a company that's not listed on a stock exchange. By buying into companies at an early stage of their development the potential for high returns is greater. These companies often become either:

• listed on a stock exchange
• bought by another investor.

Most private equity opportunities generally:

• have the potential for strong growth
• have a long term investment horizon
• offer diversification to traditional investments
• are illiquid and do not return much capital to investors until the latter part of the investment period.

Macquarie Private Equity Trust I and II

The Macquarie Private Equity Trusts I and II were established to give investors the opportunity to invest in developing companies.

The trusts focused on:

• unlisted privately-owned and selected listed companies that offer good prospects for capital growth over three to seven years
• later-stage companies that are already established (rather than providing seed or start-up venture capital).

Macquarie Private Equity Multifund (MPEM)

The Macquarie Private Equity Multifund was established to give complying superannuation funds access to a diversified portfolio of private equity, through an investment in the Macquarie Alternative Investment Trust (MAIT).

The underlying investments of MAIT are diverse private equity funds managed by some of Australia's leading private equity managers. These funds invest in privately-owned companies that offer good prospects of capital growth over three to seven years.

The fund focused its investments on private equity managers accessing companies with these characteristics:

• their potential for generating higher returns than generally available from the Australian sharemarket
• the innovative nature of the products and services
• an ownership structure that allows involvement in management and strategy
• the ability to take a long-term view to develop the company.

Macquarie Diversified Private Equity Trust, Macquarie Private Equity Trust (MPET) and Macquarie Private Equity Trust II (MPET II) are offered by Macquarie Investment Management Limited (ABN 66 002 867 003), responsible entity of the Trusts.
